Volunteers and Fosters are the backbone of this organization, it could not exist without them!
We are all volunteers, no one gets paid. We do this day in and day out because we love animals and we are just so happy to see great animals go to wonderful homes with families that will treasure them and keep them from harm. Please keep in mind you must be at least 18 years of age or older to Volunteer with us, unless you have a parent present at all times.
Not all of our dogs and puppies come from a happy background, we are a rescue after all … but with a little food, water, shelter, love and TLC, it doesn’t take these amazing animals to blossom.
We are based out of Crossville, Tennessee. We are looking for volunteers in that area to help with events and help in our facility (once we find our ideal place). You can volunteer as much or as little time as you can, we understand that we all have lives and families and work (we have those things too!).
At the Sanctuary the all-volunteer staff cares for the animals, cleans, feeds, walks the older dogs, helps to leash train the puppies, does laundry, washes dishes and most importantly spends time socializing and loving the puppies and dogs. We have found that all animals and especially young puppies need a lot of interaction with humans and other pups/dogs as they grow and mature. Other tasks include helping with the adoption process, helping at special events, fund raising, transportation to and from veterinarians, spay/neuter clinics or picking up new intake from various locations.
The sanctuary is located within a few minutes of Best Friends Animal Hospital in Crossville with easy access. The sanctuary is not open to the public for the health of the puppies and for insurance reasons. We have 2 shifts a day of 2.5 to 3 hours each for a total of 14 shifts a week Monday through Sunday. Puppies don’t take off on the weekends! The morning shift starts around 7 am while the afternoon shift starts around 4 pm. Times are a little flexible to meet the needs of volunteer’s personal work schedules. We need volunteers who can work a minimum of one or a maximum of 3 shifts per week. Training is provided to all new volunteers and they work with an experienced volunteer until comfortable on their own.
We are totally dependent upon volunteers to keep Safe Haven running and able to care for so many unwanted, dumped and homeless puppies and dogs.

Fostering is such a rewarding experience. Do you have room in your home for a temporary guest until they find their forever home?
We would also love to find some more Fosters to help give our dogs/puppies a temporary home until they are ready to go to their forever family. This can be from a few days to a few months depending on the age and condition of the animal. I can tell you from experience that this is a truly rewarding experience, knowing you are part of their journey just absolutely fills your heart. That is not to say that you won’t get attached sometimes, but when you look at their “big picture” it all becomes very clear!
We try to match up our dogs/puppies with a foster home that not only will work for them but the foster as well. All you need to provide is some space, a safe and loving environment, some toys and your time. We want them to get a feel and understanding of what it is life to live in a home with a family to help prepare them. You help them with their potty training, socialization and manners .. and the best part is you get paid in puppy kisses and wagging tails!
There are many advantages of fostering, so if you think you are interested, please fill our our Foster Application and one of our experienced fosters will be in touch to give you more information.
